In the mid-1980's parks worldwide began installing modern chute-the-chutes, and Six Flags installed several Splashwater Falls rides at parks nationwide, including one at Great Adventure.

Splashwater Falls opened during the 1987 season, with a catchy ad campaign using the Bobby Darrin song "Splish Splash" as its theme.

When the section of the park was re-themed as Movietown, Splashwater was renamed The Movietown Water Effect to fit the area.
